Why the cheap hours are on the bus

The big coaches spread the cost of a driver and a guide over many seats, and they run long: Arctic Explorers lists seven to nine hours. The minibuses carry up to 15 and lend you a thermal suit, which the big buses mostly do not, so part of the higher price per hour is the suit you would otherwise rent. A cruise or a camp is short by design, two and a half to four and a half hours, which pushes its hourly figure up even when the ticket is not dear.

Hours on the road, hours under the sky

The hourly figure flatters the long chases a little. On a cloudy night a chase may spend two hours or more each way driving to clear sky: Kilpisjärvi in Finland is about 165 km by road, and Visit Lyngenfjord gives about 120 km to Skibotn. A camp is a short bus ride away, about 30 minutes for Tromsø Villmarkssenter's husky camp, and on a cruise you can be out on deck from the start. So per hour of standing under the sky, the gap narrows; per hour of a clear sky, the chase wins on any night when the coast is cloudy, because it is the only type that can go and find one.

The private minivan, per person

Green Gold of Norway prices its six-hour private chase per vehicle, for up to eight. Shared by two, that is about $800 each, roughly $134 an hour a person; by four, about $400 each; by eight, about $200 each, or $34 an hour, about the same as a seat on a small-group minibus. For a family or a group of friends who fill the van, private is not the luxury it looks.

Two costs are easy to miss. A thermal suit rented on a coach tour, and boots on the tours that lend none, add to the bill. And most chases do not refund a cloudy night, so a second night is the real price of a sure sighting; the Safari’s Unlimited option, which lets you rejoin during your stay until you see the lights, is worth the most to someone staying three nights or more. How many nights to give Tromsø, and where to stay for them, is the subject of tromsonorthernlightsholidays.com.
