Do Tromsø Northern Lights Tours Go to Finland?
Which Tromsø northern lights tours drive into Finland, how far it is (about 165 km to Kilpisjärvi on the E8), when they go and what to bring (Oct 2026).
Some do, on the nights that need it. Visit Tromsø says a chase may go far outside the city and occasionally all the way to Finland to find better conditions. The road is the E8: south from Tromsø, inland at Skibotn, and over the border to Kilpisjärvi in Finland, about 165 km by road. Only the chases with no fixed limit on time or distance go that far, so if Finland matters to you, book one whose description names it. The one we would book is AGM Norway’s chase across borders, which goes into Finland or Sweden when the skies are clearer there and refunds you if its camera catches no aurora: from $162 a person, rated 4.5 from 1,349 reviews (checked October 2026).

The road to Finland
From Tromsø the E8 runs south along the fjords; Visit Lyngenfjord’s directions have it meeting the E6 after about 70 km, at Nordkjosbotn, and give about 120 km from Tromsø to Skibotn, at the head of the Lyngenfjord. At Skibotn the E8 leaves the coast and climbs the Skibotn valley past Helligskogen to the Finnish border, and Kilpisjärvi is just over it. Measured along the road on our map it is about 165 km from Tromsø to Kilpisjärvi; the two Kilpisjärvi hotels give 160 km and 175 km from Tromsø Airport. Going the other way, Enontekiö’s tourist board puts the Arctic Ocean only 50 km from Kilpisjärvi, roughly the drive back down the valley to the fjord at Skibotn. Visit Lyngenfjord gives about an hour and a half from Tromsø to Storfjord, the municipality Skibotn belongs to; Finland is further on.
Why the chases go there
Tromsø is on the coast, and on many winter nights the cloud comes in off the sea and sits over it. Inland, beyond the mountains, the weather is often different, and a guide reading the forecasts will head for whichever direction is clear: west to the outer coast, east towards the Lyngen Alps, or south-east up the Skibotn valley towards Finland and Sweden. The border is not the goal; the clear sky is. On a clear night on the coast, a chase may stay close to town: the Northern Lights Safari says that some nights it does.

Every one of them goes where the weather sends it, which on a clear coastal night is much closer to town. A description that names Finland tells you the guide is allowed to go that far, not that you will.

What to bring
- Your passport. Arctic Circle Tours, one of the chase operators, asks its guests to bring a valid passport because its tour may cross into Finland.
- Warmer clothes than town. Tromsø averages about -3 °C in January and February (Yr), and the inland valleys and the Finnish fells are colder. AGM Norway lends thermal overalls; on the big bus you bring your own.
- Food and patience. A night that ends in Finland is a long one: AGM Norway says its chases often run six to ten hours, and Arctic Explorers asks you not to book an early activity the next morning.
