Tromsø Aurora Camps with Dinner, Compared

Northern lights camps with dinner near Tromsø: the husky camp, the reindeer camps and Camp Tamok, with drive times, food, warm clothing and price (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

An aurora camp near Tromsø is a dinner evening in one place: a bus out of town, a fire, a lavvo, a hot meal and the sky above you, with the northern lights as the hoped-for extra. It is the warmest, most sociable way to wait for the aurora, and the one to book for children or for anyone who feels the cold. The trade is that the camp cannot move: on a cloudy night you get a good evening and no lights, where a chase would have driven to clear sky. The camp we would book first is Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s husky camp, about 30 minutes out, with thermal suits and boots lent: from $193 a person, rated 4.7 from 1,755 reviews (checked October 2026).

Tromsø Villmarkssenter: huskies and bacalao

The husky camp is the closest and the simplest. The bus takes about 30 minutes; at the camp there is a campfire with marshmallows, a lavvo (a Sámi-style tent) to sit in, reindeer skins or chairs outside for watching the sky, the resident dogs, and stories about the northern lights. Dinner is bacalao, Norwegian stockfish in tomato sauce, followed by coffee and cake, and thermal suits and boots are lent. The evening suits all ages. There is no dog sledding on this evening and no chase: if the lights do not come, you have had the visit and the dinner.

The reindeer camps

Two reindeer camps sell evenings with dinner. Tromsø Arctic Reindeer's evening includes a night-time reindeer sled ride, feeding the herd, a three-course dinner, storytelling and joik (traditional song); its own page for the sled evening gives a 25-minute drive from the centre and lists what to bring: at least two layers of warm clothing, a hat, mittens and winter boots. Tromsø Lapland's camp is at Breivikeidet, 45 minutes to an hour out, with a view of the Lyngen Alps: reindeer feeding, a meal of bidos (a Sámi stew), folk music, and snow suits and boot covers lent. Both are cultural evenings first, with a chance of the aurora.

Camp Tamok

Camp Tamok, run by Lyngsfjord Adventure, sits in the Tamok valley inland, about 75 minutes from Tromsø by car on Lyngsfjord Adventure’s directions page and 90 minutes on its accommodation page; it describes the valley as a drier climate zone with many cloud-free nights in winter, a claim of its own rather than a published statistic. Its lavvos are where the hot meals are served. It is the camp furthest from the coastal cloud, and the one with the longest bus ride.

Visit Tromsø sorts these as northern lights experiences rather than hunts: you spend more time in one place while waiting, and the aurora comes as a bonus. That is the right way to book them. Put a chase on the first doubtful night, and a camp on the night with the best forecast or as the evening you want regardless of the sky. None of the three camp listings includes photos, so bring a camera and a small tripod.
