Northern Lights Cruise from Tromsø, or a Chase by Road?

Northern lights cruises from Tromsø compared with road chases: Rødne's 2.5-hour catamaran with a second chance, a 3-hour cruise and a hot-tub yacht (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

A northern lights cruise from Tromsø is the warmer, shorter, calmer evening: two and a half to four hours on the water, a heated cabin to go back into, no long drive. What it cannot do is leave the cloud behind, because a boat stays on the fjords near the city while a road chase can drive far inland. So book a cruise for a night with a clear forecast, or for a second evening after a chase, and a chase for a doubtful night. The cruise we would book is Rødne’s catamaran, because it gives you a free ticket for the next available cruise if you see nothing: from $127 a person, rated 4.3 from 1,574 reviews (checked October 2026).

The cruises leave from the harbour in Tromsø and stay on the water near the city; the road chases can go as far as Kilpisjärvi in Finland when the coast is cloudy.

What a cruise does better

You are warm. Rødne’s catamaran has leather seats and panoramic windows as well as outdoor decks; Polar Adventures lends thermal suits and lets you stay out on deck for the whole trip; the yacht has a heated saloon, a shower and a hot tub. Nobody spends two hours in a vehicle getting to the sky, so more of a short evening is spent looking up. And the evening ends early: back in town around 23:00 to 23:30 instead of after midnight or later, which matters if you have a whale trip or a flight the next morning.

What it cannot do

A boat cannot drive to Finland. Visit Tromsø describes the point of a chase as following the weather, far outside the city and occasionally across the border; a cruise has the fjords near Tromsø and nothing beyond. On a night when the coast is under cloud, the cruise sails under it. That is why the second-chance terms matter more on a cruise than on a chase: Rødne’s free ticket and Polar Adventures' half-price rebooking are the boat operators’ answer to the night they cannot rescue.

The numbers point the same way on cost. At the usual prices, Rødne’s 2.5 hours work out at about $51 an hour and the yacht’s four at about $86, against roughly $13 to $36 an hour on the road (prices, per hour out). You pay more per hour for comfort, and get less range.

Before you go

  • Days: Rødne’s own schedule lists Fridays and Sundays from 23 October through November, Thursday to Sunday in December and January, and daily in February and March, so check the calendar before you plan around it.
  • The terms: Rødne’s free ticket is for the same season, subject to seats, and not for the final cruise on 31 March; Polar Adventures' half-price rebooking does not apply to its dinner cruise option.
  • Photos: none of the three listings includes photos; Polar Adventures' crew will help you set your camera.
  • Boots: Rødne does not allow spikes on board; the yacht asks you to take your shoes off inside.
  • Warmth: on deck it is colder than in town, where the average is about -2 °C in December and -3 °C in January and February (Yr). Only Polar Adventures lends a thermal suit.

If the forecast is cloudy and this is your only night, take a road chase instead: small group or big bus helps you choose one.
