Northern Lights Tours Tromsø is an independent visitor guide that compares the types of northern lights tour sold in Tromsø, in northern Norway: minibus and small-group chases, big-bus chases, fjord cruises, camp evenings with dinner, private tours and driving yourself. For each type it sets out the price per hour out, the group size, what happens after a cloudy night, how far the tour will drive and what is included. We do not run tours or take bookings.
Where the facts come from
- Tours, prices, times, groups and terms: the GetYourGuide listings, read in US dollars and dated on every page with the month we read them. The prices per hour are our own arithmetic on the usual prices.
- Season, activity hours, polar night, booking and chasing advice, and the self-drive guidelines: Visit Tromsø, the region’s tourist board.
- Distances on the road to Finland: Visit Lyngenfjord and our own measurement along the road on the map, set beside the figures the two Kilpisjärvi hotels give from Tromsø Airport (160 km and 175 km).
- Winter tyres, road reports and convoys: Statens vegvesen, the Norwegian road authority; winter driving rules: the Troms police district.
- Temperatures and the aurora forecast: Yr, the weather service of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and NRK; the Tromsø Geophysical Observatory.
- Cruise schedules and terms, camp drive times: the operators’ own websites.
- Car rental at the airport: Avinor.
We have not been on every tour we describe, and we say so where it matters. When a listing and an operator’s own site disagree, we give the listing’s terms for what you book and note the difference.
